MRC is led by Steve Murphy, who is a well-respected professional in research and advisory work based on a diverse background in the financial services industry.  Steve brings a distinguished history in senior leadership roles and accomplishments for both consumer and corporate banking organizations. During his career, Steve has been responsible for multiple banking assignments, including credit card operations, fraud and risk management, marketing, new business development, program and project management, product management, business start-ups and international banking business expansion. He was responsible for launching Citibank’s regional commercial credit card business across Asia Pacific while based in Hong Kong, opening six new markets in less than three years. This led to a successful career phase in corporate banking and payments research.

MRC will work to deliver quality results based on client needs, whether a financial institution, financial technology company or end user of corporate financial products. Engagements can include custom research, targeted training/strategic advisory and one-off consulting engagements, short or longer-term.  Drawing upon multinational expertise, topical coverage spans the full range of corporate banking asset classes, including global  systematically important financial institutions through regional and community banks.

Research /Advisory

As a Research Director at Mastercard (TowerGroup), Corporate Executive Board (CEB, now part of Gartner), Mercator Advisory Group and Javeling Strategy & Research (part of the Escalent family) Steve has conducted research, participated in consulting projects and provided advisory services to some of the largest commercial banks and leading technology providers in the financial services industry.
Steve has written more than 100 professional research reports across a range of corporate banking and payments subjects, including client servicing, corporate cards, payables, receivables, on-boarding, pricing and billing, small-yo-medium business (SME), treasury, trade and supply chain finance and cryptocurrency among others.

Teaching/Speaking

Since 2013 Steve has been an adjunct lecturer at the Zicklin School of Business in New York City (Baruch College, CUNY), attached to the graduate school Department of Economics and Finance.  Baruch is a highly regarded public educational institution based in Manhattan, with a diverse student body, including a large international student population of 1600, representing 189 countries.  Steve has also taught at the Touro College and University System Graduate School of Business in New York.  He teaches graduate degree courses (MBA, MS) in bank management and finance.  As an industry speaker Steve has presented on various banking-related topics at events held by AFP, Commercial Payments International (CPI), NAPCPNACHA and numerous other sponsored events.

Volunteerism

An advocate of both corporate and individual volunteerism, Steve has contributed numerous hours of his personal time to community-related activities, including as a Team Leader for larger volunteer project groups. He is a seven-time recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, signifying at least 100 hours of service in a calendar year. One of the key non-profit organizations that Steve works with is New York Cares.
